Snowdon | Height:- 1085m / 3,560ft | Summit Grid Ref:- 609,544
The Higldypigldy car park at Pen-y-pass (359m) starts us on our trek up the highest mountain in wales Mtn Snowdon, you have two choices from here, either head left and follow the old miners track past Llyn Llydaw reservoir, or head right and start up the pyg track. .
We choose to follow the pyg track up the the summit then decend via the miners track, the pyg track is easy to follow and although steep at first there are stone steps leading you up the first 250m.
You riase quickly when you get going and there are some grat views down the valley towards Llanberis,it was a miserable afternoon as we set off so ddn't get to see much above 600m.
At about 570m up the track reachs a stile cross the stile to continue up the pyg track or for those who are a bit braver head right up a steep shingle climb to the knife edge or Crib Goch at 921m, not recommended in bad weather.
The track follows the natural contours of the mountain range riasing steadily but not getting to sever untill the final push for the summit.
650m up and visibility is down to about 20m the light rain is soaking everything and the wind chill is below 0, the track can get a little confusing at times, at one point it looks like it disapears but just climb the rocks in front of you to getback on the right path.
Still in late march there is snow up here, up by the station there is a 8 foot drift blocking the line by this time the wind speed has incrased as we skirt along the line up to the summit, nut be blowing at at least 50mph can hardly stand up.
The summit achived 1085m time for a quick photo before sheltering behind the summit for a cup of tea.
You can see how wet it is but this picture does not even give the right impresion of how exposed you are when you come out of the shelter of the summit, we head down ASAP to find a B&B and get a shower.
The miners track cuts off of the pyg trackat around the 730m mark is steep to begin with but as soon as you reach the first lake "Glaslyn" it levels out, follow aroung the left hand edge then on down to Llyn Llydaw reservoir, the track runs for miles around here accross a causeway then on and on and on till it brings you back finally to the car park.
